Long Grain is an experimental projected conceived with the idea of mixing recycled silver with wood; the aim of this project is to make a collaborative jewelry collection with sliver smith Liz Stovell. The design is founded in the idea that wood is strongest along the grain; this piece highlights the natural properties of the material by introducing silver.
Two complementing types of wood were chosen – Pedunclus Oak, English (Quercus robur) and Tilia commonly known as Lime wood. Two rings of each wood were made, and then cut in exactly the same places with tolerance for the silver to be reinserted. To attract the different types of material together brass rods were drilled and glued in place.
